Below are some resources to learn about leading partners and their work in the emerging field of green ammonia.

“Harvesting Minnesota’s Wind Twice”

This paper by Ariel Kagan (MN Farmers Union) and Mike Reese (West Central Research and Outreach Center), published in Issues in Science and Technology—a magazine from the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine—summarizes the potential role of green ammonia fertilizer in regional economic development and decarbonization.

Roadmap for Distributed Green Ammonia in Minnesota

This report from the Rocky Mountain Institute outlines a comprehensive roadmap for advancing distributed green ammonia in Minnesota, identifying decarbonization efforts and direct application strategies. Given Minnesota’s fertilizer consumption and relatively high fertilizer costs due to transportation expenses, the state is a promising starting point for the implementation of distributed ammonia projects. With robust policy support and a demonstrated commitment to localized production, Minnesota could be a pioneer in the advancement of distributed green ammonia, heralding a paradigm shift in the US Midwest and potentially nationwide.

Minnesota Department of Agriculture - Green Fertilizer Grant Program

In 2023, the Minnesota Legislature appropriated $7 million to the MDA for a Green Fertilizer Grant Program. The program is intended to provide financial support to cooperatives that invest in a green fertilizer production facility located in Minnesota.

West Central Research and Outreach Center

Located at the University of Minnesota - Morris, West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC) is part of UMN’s College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS). They are part of a network of U of M Research and Outreach Centers administered by CFANS throughout Minnesota. Learn more about their work here.

University of Minnesota Morris

UMN Morris was recently ranked as the #1 campus in the United States for producing the most renewable electricity on campus per student. UMN Morris is proud to work with many local, regional, and national partners across a variety of sustainability issues. One notable partnership is the Green Prairie Alliance, a research collaboration between UMN Morris, WCROC, and the USDA Soil Conservation Research Center.

UMN Morris and WCROC launch the Center For Renewable Energy Storage Technology

For many years, UMN Morris and WCROC have explored the potential of energy storage in rural Minnesota.

In 2022, UMN Morris and WCROC partnered to launch the Center for Renewable Energy Storage Technology, or CREST. In order to reach high levels of renewable power generation, efficient and economic energy storage systems are critically needed. The UMN intercollegiate Center provides leadership in research, demonstration, education, and outreach in this vital field.
